Ezenwa Onyewuchi Commissions Science Lab, ICT/CBT Centre in Owerri, Vows to Continue Support for Quality Education

Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi, the Senator representing Imo East Senatorial District at the Nigerian Senate, has commissioned two educational projects aimed at enhancing science and digital learning in Imo State.

The commissioning ceremonies took place on Wednesday, November 26, 2025, at the respective locations — Owerri Girls’ Secondary School for the Science Laboratory, and the Claretian University of Nigeria, Nekede, in Owerri West LGA, for the fully equipped ICT and Computer-Based Test (CBT) Centre, which houses 40 HP laptops.

The projects, which were attracted and sponsored by the senator, were officially commissioned by the Deputy Governor of Imo State, Lady Chinyere Ekomaro, who was accompanied by her husband, alongside other political leaders and guests who joined the senator for the openings.

At Owerri Girls’ Secondary School, the new facility, comprising Biology, Chemistry and Physics laboratories, was designed to meet contemporary safety and academic standards. It features advanced scientific instruments, durable laboratory furniture and provisions for practical science instruction.

The laboratory is expected to significantly boost hands-on learning and prepare students for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The School Principal, Rev. Sr. Esomchi Ijeoma Nwokeafor, expressed profound appreciation to Senator Onyewuchi, describing the project as a symbol of hope and excellence.

She noted that the facility would greatly improve the school’s academic foundation and appealed for further support, including projectors, 250 laptop computers and a solar power system to ensure uninterrupted learning.

The event also featured members of the Okigwe First Movement (OFM), represented by Rt. Hon. Barr. Ike C. Ibe, who praised the senator for investing in the future of young learners.

He urged students to view themselves as future leaders destined for high offices.

At the Claretian University of Nigeria, Nekede, where the newly constructed and fully equipped ICT and CBT Centre was commissioned, the Vice-Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Wence Madu, commended the senator for the donation, describing it as a strategic partnership that strengthens the institution’s technological capacity.

He disclosed that the university has over one thousand students drawn from fifteen Nigerian states and several West African countries, expressing immense joy over the ICT centre with 40 HP laptops, which he said would be of great benefit to the students.

He further applauded the senator and appealed for additional facilities for the institution.

In his remarks, Senator Onyewuchi asserted that it was his desire to bring science closer to the students, adding that the goal is to raise future engineers, innovators, scientists and doctors.

He pointed out that attracting the science laboratory was a foundation for this vision to materialize.

“I have equipped a state-of-the-art laboratory — Biology, Chemistry and Physics — for Owerri Girls’ Secondary School. We are hoping it will be a stepping stone for them to excel,” he said.

Onyewuchi noted that he decided to sponsor the ICT and CBT centre at Claretian University not only because the institution requested it but because the world is advancing technologically, and students must be equipped to function in a digital era.

He urged the students to make proper use of the science laboratory and the ICT/CBT centres, emphasizing that they were designed for their utmost benefit. He also assured the management of both institutions that he would look into their additional requests.

Deputy Governor Chinyere Ekomaru also commended the senator for the projects, describing them as consistent with the 3R mantra of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

She urged students to use the facilities responsibly and promised to brief the Governor on the institutions’ needs and achievements to determine areas where further support could be provided.

Through these strategic interventions in both secondary and tertiary institutions, Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi continues to demonstrate purposeful representation and a clear vision for improving educational standards across the Owerri Zone and beyond.
